How Water Damage Can Ruin a Perfectly Good Day

There are many different unexpected events that can come along and either make your day better or destroy it fairly quick. Sometimes these events will literally come out of nowhere, while other times it would be hard to consider them completely unexpected. This is a characteristic of home ownership and any one who has owned a home for a lengthy period of time can attest to the fact that every great once in a while you can expect a problem to pop up that you would never have seen coming. This could not apply to anything as well as it does issues with water damage, since it is one of the most unexpected problems a home owner may ever have. Unfortunately, water related issues in the home occur quite often and can be overwhelming to deal with. Needless to say, if given the opportunity water damage can ruin what might have been a perfectly good day.

There are so many issues that can contribute to this problem, that it is hard to determine where to begin listing them. Severe storms and winter weather are at the top of the list for suspected instigators, and not too far behind that are typical water leaks related with the plumbing in your home that can easily go undetected for long periods of time due to the concealed location of the actual leak. Regardless of the source of the water issue that has founds it's way into your home, you can bet that when you do become aware of the damage that has come as a result of the water, the situation is going to be more than enough to ruin your day.

Water getting into your floor is quite common when a problem comes up. After all, water tends to flow to the lowest point. If you have carpeted floor coverings, then you could be looking at a much larger problem than the carpet itself simply getting wet. You have carpet padding underneath and then you have your plywood sub floor past that. The problem with all of these layers is that each one provides a way to hold the water in for a longer period of time. This can cause severe mold damage, not to mention the fact that your carpet and padding will be ruined and there is a good chance that the sub floor will have buckled, which will create the need for that to be replaced as well. You can imagine just how expensive this can get. If you have hardwood or laminate flooring that has the misfortune of holding water for a period of time, you could also be looking at some replacement cost. Hardwood and laminate can both buckle if they remain in contact with water for a long period of time.

The building materials that make up your walls, such as drywall board and the wooden framing, are all vulnerable to water damage if it the water is present for any length of time. If water comes in contact with your walls, you want to remove the drywall board and any water that has seeped behind the board. It is important to allow the framing to air out well if you want to avoid having to replace it. This should be encouraged with good air circulation and the use of strong fans directly facing the effected area.

Any places in the ceiling or roof that have been destroyed by water should be replaced quickly in order to avoid any further damage that could come from future inclement weather. Be sure that the source of the problem, such as shingles missing on the roof, is addressed or you will just find yourself replacing the materials multiple times if you are not careful. The quicker that you can get to the source and implement whatever repairs or replacement is necessary, the quicker you can rest assured that the issue is not going to resurface.
